Faulty Comparison Practice
TWO TYPES OF FAULTY COMPARISON ERRORS: 1. -er and -est confusion The -er version of the word is used to compare two things. The -est version is used to compare three or more things. Example: Rome is a much older city than New York. Damacus is one of the oldest cities in the world. 2. Comparing things that are not similar. A faulty comparison is one that is not logical. Items that are compared must in fact be similar. I like Bruce Springsteen's songs more than Madonna. This sentence is illogical. What is being compared? A person's songs should not be compared to a person. Songs should be compared to songs. I like Bruce Springsteen's songs more than Madonna's songs. This sentence is correct.
