Pre-AP Biology has the dual purpose of preparing students to be successful on the EOC Biology test and in working at an advanced-placement level of rigor. It required special training for the teacher every 2 years to retain certification to teach AP/Pre-AP classes. These classes ensure the success for students in their college studies because they are prepared to do inquiry, be self directed and follow procedures necessary for success in post-high school study. A complete, semester long project is required. In this project, student create and record their own data from their individual investigations. They prepare it in digital format, following all the protocols of the field. Writing at a high level is required in all projects and testing. Pre-AP, as is the 8th grade class, prepares students to do this at an AP (advanced placement) level. It also counts for High School credit. Then, if the students take AP classes in high school, many colleges accept that and passing the College Board Biology Test as a full year of credit for college work, saving money and time for the student. The AP classes a student is able to access, the more likely they are to persevere and finish post high school studies. Our work at High Island focuses on their immediate environment, the Wetlands, the Gulf Coast, and Galveston Bay. We are in a rich learning environment for life sciences. Gradually, the students will advance to the GLOBE studies and have the opportunity to compete globally. WOW |
