I am a second generation American; my grandmothers came to the United States from Mexico in the 1920s. Growing up in Wilmington, I attended Wilmington Junior High and Banning High School. Being the only child in my family of five siblings who attended college, I chose to become a teacher. I didn't have anyone in my life who pushed me in the direction of college, and I guess it was luck that I found my way to Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.
