About me |
Dear Students and Parents, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Patrick Wayman. I am originally from Chicago, Illinois, but have spent a good part of my life in Florida. Due to growing up around lots of Spanish speakers and taking Spanish for 6 years throughout middle and high school, I acquired a good amount of proficiency in in Spanish by the time I graduated from high school. I also grew up around Greek and Chinese-speaking friends, and Polish and Czech-speaking family--so languages have always fascinated me, from an early age—and I love, love, love to travel and see new places, and to infuse these experiences into my teaching. I completed my BA in French and Spanish with a concentration in multilingual / multicultural education at Florida State University--throughout which time I was grateful to have had the opportunity to study French at both the Centre Linguistique de Jonquère in Québec, Canada and at the Institut Catholique de Paris in France. At present, I have been teaching French and Spanish at Seminole High School for seventeen years, and I also lead educational student tours to foreign locals periodically. I have traveled successfully throughout most of Western Europe (England, France, Spain, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Greece) on both personal and educational pursuits, and with groups of students from SHS. In my personal travels, I have been to most states in the US, and well as Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. Most recently, (summer 2017) I lead a student tour to Canada. We traveled to Quebec City, Montreal, Tadoussac on the Saguenay Fjord, Ottawa, Toronto, and Niagara Falls. And just this past summer of 2019, I lead a tour to Spain and France (Madrid, Segovia, Barcelona, Paris, and Normandy). Stay tuned for information on the next student tour (summer 2021: Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain). I am very happy to be a language instructor and have very high expectations for all of my students. Learning another language is hard work, but it can (and should) be fun. I do my best to provide a variety of learning experiences for my students to accommodate their different and unique learning styles. In class, while some written work, as well as all quizzes and tests are done individually, students are often given the opportunity to work with partners or in small groups. They will perform brief conversations with their classmates, as well as with me. They will therefore also spend a lot of time speaking in the target language. Please note that while French and Spanish are electives, they are also academic in nature. Therefore, some students may experience difficulties at times. Students' success is important to me and I will be happy to provide additional assistance to any students who experience such difficulties--either during class, or after school (by appointment). French and Spanish National Honor Society students may also be available to provide tutoring at lunch. Additionally, free school-wide tutoring is available for foreign languages (as well as many other subjects) through the SHS after-school tutoring program. Please contact me (or consult the SHS Website) for more information. Thank you for taking the time to read this information. I am sure that we will have a great year! Sincerely, -Mr. Wayman Note: Please scroll down and click on the CLASS PAGES. There, you will find a page containing general information about all of my classes--as well as individual class pages, where agendas and assignments can be found for specific classes. Also, please note that while PCSB teachers are allowed to use outside Websites, Quia Web is not affiliated with Pinellas County Schools. |
