The primary purpose of this course is: 1. to prepare the student to communicate in various situations, using Spanish as much as possible in a realistic, true-to-life way. 2. to learn, listen, and write coherently in Spanish 3. to be exposed to the geography, history, social customs, culture, literature, art, and music of the Spanish-speaking countries of the world. 4. to stimulate and enhance the students’ interest in pursuing the many careers and job opportunities that are now available to those who speak Spanish. Classroom Rules 1. Be in class and seated Before the tardy bell rings. 2. Bring all appropriate materials to class. Have ONLY Spanish materials on desk. 3. Disruptive talking, sleeping, eating, chewing gum, and any other forms of disrespect will not be permitted. 4. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. Positive Recognition: To encourage students to follow these classroom rules, I will recognize correct behavior with praise, notes home, positive telephone calls home and special surprises throughout the year. If a student Chooses to Break a Rule: Consequences 1. First Offense:Student/teacher conference 2. Second Offense:Parental Contact (loss of privaleges/detention) 3. Third Offense: Parental Conference 4. Fourth Offense: Office Referral(with appropriate documentation) Severe Interruptions: Student sent immediately to the office ****Defiant behavior, vulgar language and/or gestures, fighting, and bringing items not approved by the school board to class, will necessitate immediate dismissal from class and an office referral.**** Required Text and Materials All students are expected to attend class prepared with the following items: 1. 11/2 inch 3-ring binder 2. notebook paper for binder 3. 5 notebook dividers- Students are to maintain a Spanish notebook with five sections: Bellringers, Classwork, Notes, Vocabulary, and Homework 4. Pens and pencils 5. 3X5 index cards for making flash cards of each chapter’s vocabulary. A class set of textbooks will be used. Students will need to bring assigned supplies to class daily unless told otherwise. I shall check daily to see that they have these items. No passes will be given during class to retrieve items from lockers. *I would also recommend purchasing a set of markers, glue and scissors to use at home for projects and a Spanish/English Dictionary.* Additional Policies 1. Absolutely no food or drink of any kind will be allowed in the classroom. Students must first get a pass to leave the classroom for any reason. 2. To do anything of the following one must raise hands for permission: a. To speak, comment, ask questions, leave desk b. To use the restroom c. To sharpen pencil, tissue, throw paper away 3. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated; refer to the school policy/catalog. 4. Continuous disruption of class will not be tolerated. 5. Follow the local computer and lab facility rules. a. Students are not allowed to download or install/delete any software, or change any settings that involve the hard drive, etc. If you have questions, ask first. b. This is a school. Please do no embarrass yourself or others with undesirable content from the internet or any other means. Assignments 1. The writing assignments will be in MLA format. 2. All homework is due the following date. 3. No late projects will be accepted. Grading Policy Final grades are determined by an overall average of tests, quizzes,daily grades, homework and projects, and participation. Major tests and projects 65% Classroom Assignments(participation,current events,quizzes) 25% Homework 10% Total 100% Class Participation: This plays a very important part in getting the most out of this class. The following guidelines will ensure the best grade possible. a) Constant attention to class activities b) Active listening c) Enthusiasm for learning and a positive attitude d) Endeavoring to use Spanish whenever possible e) Volunteering for classroom activities f) Being on task for all individual or group activities Instructor’s Note Lots of material will be covered in this course. Students can get the grade they want/earn. Skills learned in this course may be used for further education. Attendance is essential for learning.
