The Five Themes of Geography

Directions: Read the definitions for each of the five themes of geography and complete the activity below by matching a theme to the appropriate statement.

* Location: The theme of location is used by geographers to distinguish exact positions. For example, Tenafly Middle School is located at 30 Sunset Lane. The system of latitude and longitude is used to distinguish exact positions around the earth. You might also use a relative address, telling where one place is by referring to another place. For example, TMS is relatively close to McKay school.

* Place: Geographers identify natural and human features that make one place different from every other place. You can identify a specific place by its landforms, climate, plants, animals, people, or cultures.

* Human-Environment Interaction: Geographers identify how people relate to the environment that surrounds them. As people live in an area, they often begin to make changes to it, usually to make their lives easier.

* Movement: Geographers identify how people, goods, and ideas move from place to place or location to location.

* Regions: Geographers identify regions as a group of places that share common features. There are many types of regions such as countries, states, cities, cultural areas, climate areas. Regions can be extremely large in size or considerably small in size.
