Choose "il" when you would say he or it in English. Use "il" to refer to masculine nouns even when they're objects. Choose "elle" when you would say she or it in English. Use "elle" to refer to masculine nouns even when they're objects. Choose "elles" to refer to female people. Also, choose "elles" to refer to plural feminine nouns even when they're objects--such as pizza, a feminine noun in French. Choose "ils" to refer to male people. Also, choose "ils" to refer to plural masculine nouns even when they're objects--such as sandwich a masculine noun in French. Finally, choose "ils" when a mixed group of males and females or of masculine and feminine nouns is referred to.
