Knowing this definition will help you as well: Open, closed, open is a technique of playing snare drum rudiments, especially used during auditions. Open, closed, open technique consists of beginning the rudiment very slow and controlled, speeding up evenly until at the maximum speed for the drummer, then slowing back down after maintaining that speed. Also, remember that in multiple bounce rolls "open" refers to the double bounce and "closed" refers to the buzz roll. When you play open, closed, open you are speeding up to the point that you have to play a buzz roll because it is so fast. It is important that you understand this difference and don't think that open just means slow and closed just means fast!!!
