A school gave extra marks to pupils who were good citizens. Mary Brown had more marks for being helpful than anyone else in the third grade. One day as she and her classmates were leaving school, a woman with two little girls came along. The woman was carrying a large bundle. One of the little girls suddenly tripped and fell. As the mother started to help her, the bundle dropped to the ground. Mary quickly sprang to the rescue, and picked up the child. Her classmates also wanted to be helpful but Mary had acted more quickly than they. This was because she had already formed the habit of being helpful.
