New Year’s Eve, or St. Basil’s Eve as it is called in Greece, is a happy time for Greek children. Boys and girls go out carrying lanterns and baskets, singing carols as they go. When all have had their baskets filled with fruit and pennies by those who listen, they return to their homes. Then comes the gayest time of all, for the family gathers around St. Basil’s cake. This cake is very large and has in the center an olive branch which the children decorate while they sing. The father asks the blessing of St. Basil and cuts the cake, which contains a silver coin. The first piece of cake is set aside for God, the next for St. Basil, and then one is given to each person in the family. Whoever finds the silver coin in his piece will be the luckiest person in the year ahead.
