Strategies - Helpful Hints

• Don’t be afraid of long words or difficult-looking questions. If you take the time to understand the question, a lot of questions will make more sense than they did at first.

• Restate questions – put them in your own words.
o When you see the word NOT in a question, circle it and then restate the question. One way to restate this kind of question is “Which answer is false?”

• If there is a picture, diagram or reading passage, go straight to the question first because sometimes, you don’t need the picture, diagram or reading passage to answer the question correctly. In this case, READ from the BOTTOM UP

• Use process of elimination if you aren’t sure what the answer is. Remember – your answer has to make sense!

o Make sure that you continue to study and remember! Knowing a lot about biology helps you to understand the question too.

REMEMBER: It is ok to skip a question if you are still unsure. Continue with taking the test and come back to it later. But - make sure that before you turn in the exam that you have answered all the questions!
