Read the story below. Aaron Burr was one of America's worst villains. In 1804, he killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Two years later, Burr was involved in a secret plot. He is believed to have been trying to get some states to split off from the rest of the country. Although Burr was arrested and tried for treason, a court found him not guilty of the charges. Burr must have had some good qualities, as he served one team as vice president and was nearly elected president of the United States. He fought bravely in the Revolutionary War. Burr and Hamilton were sometimes rivals in the courtroom. Like many politicians today, Burr was a lawyer by profession; he was one of the best lawyers in New York City, both before and after his career in politics. Obviously, New Yorkers didn't mind if their lawyers had committed a crime or two.
