There are not many lands in the world that do not belong to a country. However, the North Pole is one area of land that does not come under the jurisdiction of a particular country. It is considered neutral territory. This is not the only reason the North Pole is unusual. It is one of only two places on the surface of the Earth that get six months of daylight. Until the next six months, the North Pole is in complete darkness and receives no light from the sun.

You might think that the warmth from the sunlight would melt the ice that covers the North Pole, but the North Pole is too far from the sun. Whether it is light or dark the North Pole is usually covered in ice.
