Rule 1 - Nouns that form their plurals by adding -n, -en, or -nen

Rule 2 - Nouns that form their plurals by adding an -e

Rule 3 - Nouns that add no ending in the plural, and sometimes have an Umlaut change. Also includes nouns ending with -chen and -lein

Rule 4 - Nouns that form their plurals by adding an -er. These often take an Umlaut in the plural form

Rule 5 - Nouns that form their plurals by adding an -s (mostly imported words)

Pay attention to the way that nouns and noun plurals are grouped. Learn to begin thinking of new German nouns according to similarities with others you have already learned. It will help you to gain mastery of them, along with personal satisfaction for having done it.
