Mr. Lopez Joins Jollyville


There’s a new face at Jollyville Elementary School this year. It’s Mr. Jose Lopez! Mr. Lopez teaches one of the third-grade classes. He is taking over for Mrs. Hopkins because she retired.
When Mr. Lopez was young, he used to play school with his brothers. Mr. Lopez always played the teacher. He gave his brothers homework. Then he corrected the homework and gave it back. Mr. Lopez thinks those games made him want to teach.
Mr. Lopez says his favorite subject is reading. He loves to read stories and help other people learn to read. Every day at two o’clock, many students sit on the floor in Mr. Lopez’s room. That’s when he has story time. Then they have a reading lesson.
Mr. Lopez has a wife named Annette and a baby son named Emilio. He also has a dog named Paws. you can meet them all at the school picnic next weekend.


New Girl in Town

It is the first day of the school year. A girl gets on the school bus. She looks for a seat.
Kayla: Can I sit here?
Anya: Sure. I’m Anya. What’s your name?
Kayla: I’m Kayla. I just moved here from Arizona.
Anya: That’s far away. Isn’t that where the Grand Canyon is?
Kayla: Yes, I went there last summer. A tour guide led us down to the canyon bottom on donkeys!
Anya: Really? That must have been great! Come with me when we get to school. I’ll introduce you to my friends. Then you can tell them about your trip, too.
Kayla: Okay! I’m so glad I met you.
