Responding to Imagery in Paintings -- Norman Rockwell's "The Runaway"
When we examine a painting and look for a message that the artist was trying to impart, we are looking for subtleties that are often conveyed through the arrangement of the imagery. This is done through facial expressions of the characters, and how images are presented in terms of height, lighting, the setting, vivid contrasts, the point of view of the viewer, and other ways of emphasizing or bringing out characters and feelings.
