Tier-Two (Academic Discourse) Words Set #1

This contextually-based vocabulary exercise has students recognize and learn "tier two" words that are helpful in learning and discussing literature and academic concepts. This is in contrast to "Tier One" words that are common, everyday words, and "Tier Three" words that are complex and specific to a discipline, such as photosynthesis in science, metaphor in English, etc. It's helpful to use Tier Two words in your essay writing to gain facility in wielding them. To give a context for learning these words and to show how they can be used, many of these sentences using these words are centered around Edgar Allan Poe story "The Tell-Tale Heart." -- Mr. Chamberlain
