7/8.TAKS-M Reading Practice B
A Dream of Flight This selection is about the first people to fly. A man named Otto Lilienthal (Lil-ee-en-THAL) spent a lot of time in Germany watching birds fly. This gave him the idea to make gliders. A glider is like an airplane, but it is not powered by an engine. Lilienthal flew gliders many times. After his death, two brothers named Orville and Wilbur Wright used some of Lilienthal’s ideas. They created the first plane powered by an engine. Read the selection to find out how the Wright brothers were able to make their engine-powered plane work.
