Gatsby Quotations 1-5

How To Respond To Quotes:
1) First tell me who said it and why. Give me the obvious context.
2) Next, analyze the moment by explaining what it reveals about the character, symbolism, theme or plot. This is about analysis, author purpose, and reader experience. You must read between the lines.
3) Finally, relate to other elements of the story. Foreshadowing? Extra symbolism? Insight to character? Relate characters to the larger symbolism of “America” when you are able.
4) You will probably want to find the quote in the book to make sure you get everything. Write small.

“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

Nick reveals this as advice that his father gave him long ago. Nick took the advice seriously and seems to hold off judgment of anybody. The result is that people of questionable character often trust him with their secrets. This makes him a good narrator for our story because he reveals information to us that he otherwise would not have access to. One example of this is his holding off judgment of Tom, which allows him to reveal facts to us that we couldn’t have had otherwise.
