Stem-changing verbs.
Remember, -AR & -IR stem-changing verbs in the present DO NOT have a change in the preterite. However, verbs from the -IR family do change the stem in both the present and in the preterite. The change is different, though.
The stem change occurs only in third person, singular and plural (él, ella, Ud. ellos, ellas). e --> i & o --> u
