Participle Activities #1

This is not as easy as the unit on the Sentence Core. But if you really try to learn from these activities, ask questions in class, and give it your best, the unit will help a lot with your writing.

Participles can function as verbs, adjectives, and nouns in sentences. It's part of the flexibility of thinking that our language offers. They can begin two kinds of phrases as well as be on their own. One phrase pattern is called, not surprisingly, the participial phrase. Participial phrases always begin with participles (that is why they have that name!) and, here, the participle functions as an adjective. The other phrase is the gerund phrase, which always begins with the present participle; the gerund acts as a noun.
