Using Past and Past Perfect Tenses in Complex Sentences
In this activity, you will see pairs of sentence stems (a subject and its predicate phrase). You will make these stems clauses by using FINITE VERBS (showing time). You will set a definite past time by using the simple past tense in the first clause. You will show an earlier past time by making the verb in CAPS in the second clause past perfect. You will also be given a subordinator with which to combine the clauses. If the dependent clause comes first, use the punctuation pattern DC,IC. If the subordinator goes with the second clause, use the pattern IC DC.
