Narrative Writing w/Smiley Face Techniques

Part of the reason that readers love To Kill a Mockingbird is that Harper Lee has an incredible sense of voice in her writing. It's not just how we might imagine her speaking in her charming southern accent, it's also her style and attitude that streams forth and lingers in our ear. We'll be examining some passages from the novel with that in mind and write some passages on our own, aiming to include a number of these time-honored techniques of creative or narrative writing. (We'll use this technique on other occasions, too.)

Write a paragraph about a time in your life when you were new to a place or school or camp and probably felt lonely. Use "smiley-face techniques" to bring a strong sense of voice to your writing. (This is Mary Ellen Ledbetter's concept to describe how teachers often use smiley-faces in the margins to show how they enjoyed it when students use these time-honored techniques of strong writing.)
