CASE STUDY 06 - Jane Winston

Jane Winston is a 45-year-old woman who has come to see her nurse practitioner because she is concerned about a mole (nevus) on her arm. Jane has always been healthy and active in outdoor activities. In her teens she worked many summers as a lifeguard. Jane never protected her skin from the sun because she considered being tan “attractive” and has always tried to get as deeply tanned as possible. She remembers having blistering sunburns at least twice before the age of 17 years. Jane tells you that the mole on her arm has been present since high school but recently it “looked different.” She says it is “not painful but does itch.” The nurse practitioner refers Jane to a surgeon who excises the mole and several surrounding lymph nodes. On pathological analysis by the pathologist, the diagnosis is confirmed as malignant melanoma without metastasis.
