CASE STUDY 04 - Rita Murphy

Rita Murphy, age 56, was admitted to the hospital to undergo endometrial testing for dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Mrs. Murphy began to pass blood clots larger than a quarter after not having had a menstrual period for 3 years. Her last Pap smear and pelvic examination, done more than 5 years ago, was normal. Blood tests show slight anemia with a hemoglobin level of 10.4. Mrs. Murphy has been taking unopposed estrogen for 2 years because the progesterone prescribed by her gynecologist made her feel bloated. Admission orders include starting an intravenous (IV) solution of dextrose 5% and lactated Ringer's solution.
