Writing related to "Battle by the Breadfruit Tree"

One of our reading standards this year asks for students to figure out what the theme is in a text and analyze how an author develops it as the story or text proceeds. It's usually present in how the characters relate, but it can be shown in other ways, too. Here's the reading standard:

RL.8.2. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text.

We're going to be exploring how the theme of survival can be depicted through conflict, which shows characterization, and imagery (sensory details and figurative language, such as simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole...).
