SPORT OF READING - PINK 03

Early one November morning, smoke began to rise out of the sea and blacken the sky. What was the cause? Was it a vessel in distress? Ships from nearby waters rushed to the scene to investigate the mysterious smoke. Would they find a ship on fire?

From the ocean floor, the North Atlantic was bubbling and roaring. A split had developed on the ocean bottom more than four hundred feet beneath the surface of the sea. What had happened?

What sailors saw when they reached the smoky scene was not a burning ship at all. What they WITNESSED was the birth of an island! The smoke was from an undersea volcano. This volcano, which first erupted in 1963, grew into the island of Surtsey.

If you look at a recent map, you should be able to find the island of Surtsey, south of Iceland.
