Sport of Reading - Yellow 03
A thief in West Germany learned in a very strange way that crime doesn't pay. This burglar broke into the only church in a small Bavarian village. As far as he knew, he was the only one in the church at the time. He looked around and located the collection box, which he intended to steal. There probably wasn't much money in it because the peasants of the parish were very poor. However, the thief never even did get to find out how much money there was. The thief stealthily approached the box. As he tried to pry open the top of the box to remove its contents, he was struck from behind and injured badly. The police who later described the incident said that the thief had been hit by Brother Konrad, the patron saint of Bavaria's poor. Did the saint really come along and strike down the thief? Well, almost. A statue of the saint that stood in a wall niche over the collection box had fallen and hit the thief. The cries of the hurt and surprised bandit caught the attention of a priest who summoned the police. What caused the statue to fall at that moment?
