"Clemente! Clemente!" roared the thousands of baseball fans gathered to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates play baseball. The fans were calling for their favorite, Roberto Clemente, to save the day for the Pirates. Clemente, a native of Puerto Rico, rarely let his fans down. he won baseball games with his bat, his glove, his arm, and his brains.

Evidence of Clemente's great skill can be found in the baseball record books. He was one of the only eleven major leaguers to achieve a career high of 3,000 hits or more. He played 18 years in the big leagues and won four National League batting titles.

Most of all, Roberto Clemente was an unselfish and kind person. He went out of his way to help others. After learning of a disastrous earthquake in Nicaragua, Roberto directed his energies into keeping medical supplies and food flying from Puerto Rico to the stricken nation.

On December 31, 1972, New Year's Eve, Robert Clemente boarded a plane loaded with supplies DESTINED for the earthquake victims of Nicaragua. Moments after takeoff, the plane plunged into the sea and Roberto Clemente was killed. This tragedy came at the peak of his brilliant career. Clemente was immediately voted into baseball's Hall of Fame. However, the game's highest honor could not bring back the man. He has been greatly missed.
