Sport of Reading - Pink 09

Animals have many ways of keeping themselves safe from harm. Big animals like bears and tigers can use their teeth or claws to scare others. Deer are able to run quickly away from DANGER. And who ever heard of anything trying to bother a large, strong elephant?

Many small animals have to run and hide from an ENEMY. It's not always so safe to be small. A small skunk, however, will face bravely just about any danger. Even though a skunk has small teeth and little claws, most people and animals leave it alone.

What does the skunk use to scare an enemy away? It gets rid of all dangers by spraying something that smells terrible into the air. When another animal comes too close, a skunk will lift its fluffy tail and spray. The smell is so awful that even the skunk leaves in a hurry!

Most animals lean that it is safer to be friendly to a skunk. It's even safer not to go near it at all. Being a skunk's enemy can really stink!
