What can be done with 25,000 turtles? A pet store owner in France was faced with just this problem. Can you guess what he did?
The turtles had been shipped form Morocco. They arrived three months late. Besides the turtles the man had ordered, five thousand extra ones were sent. The man didn't want that many. He couldn't sell all the turtles. They were not the kind used in turtle soup. So he decide3d to leave the 365 baskets of turtles right there where they were - at the port.
The port's VETERINARIAN heard about the turtles. He said they had to be well cared for as long as they stayed in France. Turtles need to crawl around, eat, and be sprinkled with water every day. So the turtles were let out of the baskets. They were put into two large buildings. They had never had lettuce before, so some of them got sick. The port's animal doctor came in twice a day to see them. The pet dealer had to pay for the turtles' care.
What finally happened to all the turtles? They were all sold. None of them became soup.
