Sport of Reading 02 - Purple

Bicycles are becoming an increasingly popular form of transportation. They are inexpensive to operate, don't pollute the atmosphere, and don't need a large parking space. This two-wheeled CONVEYANCE, however, is not a recent invention.

A look at history would indicate that people and the bicycle have coexisted for a long time. Archaeologists have UNEARTHED an ANCIENT Egyptian painting depicting what would qualify as a simple bicycle - two wheels connected by a bar. It is reported that the ancient Chinese had a similar bicycle with wheels made of bamboo.

The forerunner of the modern bicycle was seen in Paris just before the turn of the nineteenth century. This device has two wheels, a wooden animal head at one end, no pedals, and no steering mechanism. All motion was supplied by the rider. Comparing these primitive cycles to our modern cycles almost makes a long walk seem like less work.
