The return each year of the swallows to the Mission San Juan Capistrano in California is a phenomenon that is one of nature's most unusual. Without fail, the birds always arrive on St. Joseph's Day, March 19. Many people gather to witness this ANNUAL arrival. In 1973, for example, the bells at the mission began to peal at exactly 8:05:47 a.m. to tell all those within hearing distance that once again the bird were arriving on schedule. The bells signaled the sighting of a few birds, the first CONTINGENT of a much larger flock of swallows that would appear in small groups throughout the week. A crowd of approximately 38,000 people was on hand to greet the arrival of the first birds. The happiness of those who were there was evident as the new visitors settl3ed into the comfort of their nests. In this world of uncertainty, the regular arrival each year of the swallows is viewed by many as a happy omen.
