As and after you read, use active reading strategies as much as possible. "Active Reading Questions" are time-honored methods of helping us reflect upon and retain what we have read. This activity is supposed to take about fifteen minutes -- the idea is to reflect on your reading, not to write an essay. Everyone will come up with three (3) questions and identify ONE vocabulary word or term. (use the guess and check method).
Do 1 other topic as well from the list. Usually it will be your choice as to which other topic you choose, but you need to vary your choice, too. Sometimes I might assign your group to a particular choice, or use your responses as a way to initiate discussion the next day.
Writing is thinking that is focused and expressive. Writing about what you read makes you a stronger reader as well as a stronger writer. This is not just busy work! If you do this in an engaged manner, it gets you processing what you've read in powerful ways. Years later, people who have been challenged to write a lot recall that the experience helped them develop as writers.
The grading "formula" is as follows: 8 points will be assigned as "homework points." (Homework is often "checked" by teachers. Sometimes I will read your responses carefully and give feedback about your questions, vocab, and your paragraph. Then the formula will be more like this: 8 HW+ 4 Qs + 1 V + 8 P + 3 Quote + 1 Style = 25/25.
