Writing with Appositive Phrases
You may recognize these lyrics, adapted from a song in a popular musical: Doe, a deer, a female deer Ray, a golden drop of sun Me, a name I call myself Far, a long, long way to run Sew, a needle pulling thread La, a note to follow “Sew” Tea, a drink with jam and bread…. The lines of this song make a series of appositive phrases: phrases that re-name or identify a noun or pronoun. Directions: For the next three questions, fill in the blank with a noun or pronoun for each appositive phrase, or an appositive phrase that renames or identifies the noun or pronoun in each sentence. You’ll need to be creative.
