Lucky and unlucky numbers (NH 1) The Chinese like the concept of pairs, believing tham auspicuious for happy events. The symbol 喜喜 shuāng xǐ is formed by joining two 喜 xǐ( happiness), and is used udring wedding ceremonies to wish coubples happiness for the future. Five and six are also regarding as lucky numbers by Chinese, and are often used in phrases meaning lucky. 五福临门 wǔ fú lín mén(arrivial of five happiness) 六六大顺 liù liù dà shùn (double lucky six) The number four- 四 sì- is generally regarded to be unlucky as it has the same pronunication, although a diffreent tone and characters as the word death 死 sǐ. People try to avoid using the number four for things assoicated with illness or danger. Some hospitals and hotels in China/ Taiwan do not have a fourth fllor as it would sock the patients’ families to hear that their loved one were on the “death floor”. Some people also avoid car registration numbers ending in four. However, not all Chinese believe in this supersition, just as not all Westerners believe that the number thirteen is unlucky.
