Simple Past Tense: Strong Verbs I (Shaum's pp. 157-158)
Think of 'Strong Verbs' as having a mind of their own - the vowels in the root of the verb may change.
e.g. Ich schrEIbe jetzt --> Gestern schrIEb ich einen Brief.
The endings will usually still follow a regular pattern but you should learn the imperfect form. The roots will also usually be given in a dictionary, and then the main thing you will need to remember, is the endings.
