Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences
To recognize a simple sentence, a complex sentence, or a a compound sentence, you have to have an understanding of independent and dependent clauses. An INDEPENDENT CLAUSE contains a subject, a predicate, and expresses a complete thought. A DEPENDENT CLAUSE contains a subject and a predicate, but does not express a complete thought. SIMPLE SENTENCES contain one independent clause. COMPOUND SENTENCES double-up on simple sentences: they contain two independent clauses. COMPLEX SENTENCES are a mixed bag; they contain an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses.
