Writing on TKAM (Chapter 15 or 17) (250 word parag. w/3 brief quotations!) due Thurs, June 7
For this assignment, we will focus on ONE of these two parts:
1. In Chapter 15 (toward the end of it) there is a famous scene outside the Maycomb jail, where Tom is staying before the trial. Atticus is playing the night watchman and Jem, Scout and Dill, having escaped undetected by Aunt Alexandra, show up, curious. Soon after, Atticus has visitors: Mr. Cunningham and other men from Old Sarum; they are intent on lynching Tom. The scene is extraordinary in how Scout's presence and "intervention" play a major role in changing the outcome.
2. In Chapter 17, the narrator provides descriptions of the two settings of the Ewells' property and the Negro Settlement. Show a contrast and provide short quotations for support and specifics. The idea is that a setting can help reveal character, and part of this trial is getting to know these people (Tom, who is part of the Negro Settlement, and Mayella and Bob Ewell) and their testimony. --
This is open book and quotations are expected. I provided a graphic organizer for the first topic which you can use or consider as you wish.
