Alike But Different

Wilbur and Orville Wright built the first working airplane. On December 17, 1903, they made the first flight of a powered airplane. These were great accomplishments by two special men. Yet people often talk about the Wright Brothers as if they were one person. The two men shared the same goal. However, they were different in many ways.

Wilbur was born in 1867 in Milville, Indiana. Orville was born in 1871 in Dayton, Ohio. The boys were raised in a loving home, filled with books. They were both bright. But Wilbur was the better student. He was quiet, thoughtful, and hardworking. He read all the time. He also liked doing research. On the other hand, Orville was full of energy. He loved adventure, but didn't always do his work. He sometimes got into trouble at school.

Later, Wilbur became a great writer and speaker. Orville became a champion bike rider. It was Wilbur who came up with the idea for the first airplane. It was Orville's energy that helped make that dream come true.
