Our block between Metropolitan Ave. and Midwest Ave. is a play street. There is no real playground here, so the street is the playground for the youngsters who live nearby. The asphalt has lines marking the areas for stickball, soccer, basketball and places for the kids to play. Cars are forbidden on the street during the day. All summer long, the street rings with the joyful shout of victorious teammates and the indignant retorts of the moment’s losers. Competition is always intense, but the foremost rivals during a game are frequently the best of friends afterwards. In the late August, the annual tournaments are held, the youngsters get to demonstrate the skills they’ve achieved over the summer in a series of exhibits and games. Spectator line the curbs to applaud the contestants and, in a ceremony afterwards. One of the city councilors presents awards to the winning athletes. Our street gives us the opportunity to learn a lot about athletic competition. In fact, many outstanding professional athletes were beginners on the pavement of the city’s play streets. Of ever more importance however, hundreds of prominent professionals in numerous occupations learned their first lesson of cooperation, teamwork and competition on these streets.
