GT 6 HW Direct Objects and Prepositional Phrases
1. To find a Direct Object, usethis formula: S + AV + WHO or WHAT? If the answer is a noun or pronoun that is NOT in a prep phrase, you have a DO. 2. Prep phrases follow this pattern: Preps + optional modifier + noun or pronoun = prep phrase. For a list of common preps, look on p. 370 in your grammar textbook or go to my webpage linked to the BMMS webpage and click on the preposition page. 3. Adjective prep phrases HAVE to be next to the noun or pronoun they modify and answer one of these questions: which one? how many/much? OR what kind? These type prep phrases are NOT movable. 4. Adverb prep phrases usually modify verbs, but can also modify adjectives or adverbs (AVA). They can be moved in the sentence WITHOUT changing the meaning of the sentence. 5. Remember that you MUST have an AV. The linking verbs that are almost ALWAYS LV unless they are being sweet little helpers are these: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been. 6. Remember TO + VERB is an INFINITIVE (To Infinity and Beyond!) and TO+ Optional Modifier + Noun or Pronoun is a PREP PHRASE. Don't confuse the two! 3.
