The Best Solution
It was the day of the city parks' basketball championship. We were all gathered at the court when Sara, our best free-throw shooter, sat down on a bench and said, " I don't feel very well, Coach."
"What's wrong?"
"My stomach...my head...I think I'm coming down with the flu."
"It's just nerves," said Alvin, our center. "You'll be fine, Sara." Coach looked at Sara and shook his head. "No, you definitely look pale," he said.
"Take deep breaths, Sara," said Linda, our small forward. "And say to yourself 'I won't be sick, I won't be sick...'"
Coach shook his head. "Forget it. Sara has to go straight to bed. The only thing we can do is forfeit the game."
"Forfeit?" Everyone groaned. "But we've worked so hard!"
"Hey, what about my brother, Casey?" I said. "He shoots free throws from his wheelchair better than I can on two good legs."
"But...he's never played with us before," said Linda.
"I've seen him play," said Sara. "He's awesome"
"It might be against the rules," said Wally.
"Does anyone have a better idea?" asked Coach.
Alvin shrugged. "We can't forfeit, that's for sure."
Coach turned to me with a grin. "Doug, go get your brother," he said. "Win or lose, we're fielding a team today."
