People who are born in the U.S.A. automatically have American citizenship. A person may also automatically become a citizen if at least one of their parents is an American citizen. Last year, 680,000 immigrants earned their citizenship by meet all the legal requirements. Applicants for citizenship must prove they can read, write, and speak English. They also must pass a civics exam that includes questions about American history, government and geography. Here is a sample quiz that an applicant for citizenship would have to complete.
