In German, lengthy statements may be quoted indirectly by using the subjunctive. IN English, remarks such as 'he continued', 'he also mentioned', or 'he stated further' have to be added as reminders to the listener or reader to indicate that the indirect quotation continues. This is not necessary in German, because the subjunctive itself signals the continuation of the indirect quote!
