CASE STUDY 12 - Mickey Cooper

Mickey Cooper is a 32-year-old white male who recently moved to Los Angeles from the Pacific Northwest, where he lived since birth. He is being seen in the physician's office for a routine physical examination for his employment as a cross-country truck driver. He mentions to the nurse that he has had some changes in his vision and has some nonspecific weakness and numbness in his hands and fingers. These symptoms seem to be aggravated when he plays racquetball and during extremely hot weather. He complains of leg spasms that occur at night. During the interview his speech is slow and he has difficulty forming some words.
On further examination, it is noted that he has abnormally increased deep tendon reflexes and slight tremors in both hands. Laboratory findings are all within normal range, but a computerized tomography (CT) scan shows increased demyelination of the white matter of the central nervous system and hard plaquelike lesions.
