Some people say that Babe Didrikson Zaharias was the best athlete of all time. She was a great runner, jumper, diver, bowler, and roller skater. Babe beat most people at baseball, basketball, and golf, too! Her real name was Mildred. People started calling her Babe when she was 12. At that time, she was playing baseball and hitting many long home runs. She reminded people of Babe Ruth, the great baseball player. Then she went to the Olympics. She won medals for the high jump, the hurdles, and the javelin throw. She won two first-place medals and one second-place medal. Babe got many prizes for her skills. Sports reporters even named her the top woman athlete in a hundred years! A Girl Called Babe She stepped up to plate and gave a mighty swing. Then WHACK! The ball sailed over the fence, and her team began to sing! The crowd let out a roar. Now they understood why people called her Babe. She really was that good!
