DOES THE REVIEWER LIKE THE FILM?
The inspired casting of Tobey Maguire and the filmmakers' intelligent fidelity to the most appealing aspects of the original Marvel Comics character ensure that "Spider-Man" is a surprisingly charming and even witty match for the best of Hollywood's comic-book adaptations.
The director and screenwriter take the risk of letting a bittersweet teen romance loom almost as large in the story line as the lead character's crime-fighting struggles-and it pays off.
There are plenty of corny moments, but the level of is never allowed to overwhelm either the romance or the adventure.
And, with its alienated teenage hero, there are times when "Spider-Man" seems to aspire to the profound darkness of the graphic novel that formed the basis of Tim Burton's "Batman."
Orphan Peter Parker (Maguire) is a high school science geek with an unrequited crush on Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) who lives next door.
During a school field trip, Peter is bitten by a genetically-engineered super-spider. (Back in 1962 when the original character was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, the scientific bogey was radiation.)
The next day he wakes up with, among other things, better vision, a muscular physique and a sixth "spider sense" that warns him of danger.
But it takes a tragic error of judgment before Peter begins to understand his powers and consequences and he embarks on a career of crimefighting.
