CASE STUDY 15 - Adam Bassett

Adam Bassett, 50 years old, visits the health clinic for a complete physical examination. Mr. Bassett is very concerned because he has had periods of vertigo on and off for the past 2 days. He describes these episodes as occurring with sudden motion and then “everything just seems to spin around” for several minutes. He admits that these episodes are becoming more frequent.
Past medical history includes a recent ear infection that was treated with a 10-day course of the antibiotic amoxicillin while he was on vacation in Florida. He denies any current ear pain, headaches, fever, or vomiting but says his ear still feels “full.” He has noticed that he has blurred vision, especially when reading the newspaper. He does not wear corrective lenses, and his last eye examination was more than 10 years ago. Mrs. Bassett accompanied her husband to the examination and says she feels her husband does not hear as well as he once did because she finds she often has to repeat things to him. Mr. Bassett denies any difference in his hearing or tinnitus.
Family history is negative for diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
