Take 72 and divide by either the number of years (to get interest rate needed) or divide by the interest rate (to get the number of years needed) For example: What annual interest rate will cause your money to double in 8 years? 72/8 = 9% How long will it take for an investment to double at 4% interest? 72/4 = 18 years
